Me during active duty with FF Groß Flottbek:
This picture was taken twenty years ago, 12 May 1984, in the port of Hamburg during an civil defence
exercise which included units from fire departments, THW and other organizations. The sign declaring
me a member of the fire department of Groß Flottbek is clearly visible in my right front window.

I was one of the first generation of civil defence vehicles in Germany, which were aquired in great
numbers for the newly formed Luftschutzhilfsdienst (LSHD). In Hamburg, there have been 130 TLF 8.
The Luftschutzhilfsdienst was an organization, that existed up to 1972 parallel to the THW. In this time
rescue was the main task of the THW and fire fighting, ABC-counterwarfare and telecommunication
services in times of war and civil emergencies were tasks of the LSHD. Normally the LHSD was to be
used only in times of war but LSHD units were also deployed during disaster situations, e.g. the
spring tide in Hamburg in 1962.

LSHD units were organized in companies that consisted of three task units and one supply unit and
were housed in centralized garrisons. With the exception of the vehicles from the fire department
all vehicles of the LSHD were painted in RAL 7008, but we had our red coats in RAL 3000 from the
beginning. From 1964 to 1971 I was in a state of readiness but didn't march out even once, just for
a few exercises on training I got to leave the garrison. Me and my comrades were billeted in one
of the two central depots in Hamburg-Rissen or Hamburg-Langenhorn (Heidberg). A lot of Unimog
404 S, but also Magirus, Borgward and Hanomag, did wait for their deployment in this depot.
Fortunatly Hamburg was spared by desaster situations and it was a boring time.

These two brothers-in-arms of me from my time with the "Katastrophenschutz Hamburg" are pensioned
also today and in a museum of the "Hamburger Feuerwehr Historiker e.V." The left one, a TLF 8 like
me, still has the coat-of-arms of the LSHD on it's door, a circled blue-yellow triangel with the letters ZS
in the center. The other one is a EF (Entgiftungsfahrzeug, decontamination vehicle) with EA (Entgiftungs-
anhänger, decontamination trailer) of the ABC-counterwarfare units, painted in RAL 2004.

Due to financial reasons and due to a lack of personel the LSHD was dismanteled in 1972, personel
and vehicles were transfered to the remaining services Feuerwehr, THW, DRK, ASB, MHD und JUH.
During this reorganization I was transfered to the fire department of Groß Flottbek in the west of Hamburg.
I remained there up to 1985 and was mothballed again. This time for half a year together with other TLF8
in one of the central depots of the FRG, until I got my honourable discharge.

First registration in 1964 and laying up in 1985 are shown in my vehicle registration document:

The wings of vehicles of the firefighter departments were painted black in the sixties. At the beginning of
the seventies the wings of fire-engines were repainted in white to give them a higher visibility. Most of my
comrades have white wings nowadays, but somehow they did miss me, and I thank god for it.
